Abstract

Resonant elastic and inelastic scattering of 2–4 MeV bremsstrahlung by 23Na has been studied. Level widths are determined by a self-absorption measurement or by comparing the scattered intensity with that observed for levels of known width in 27Al or 55Mn. For the 2.08 MeV, 72+ level we find Γ0 = 1.11 ± 0.10 meV and Γ = 15±3 meV. For the 2.64 MeV, 12 level, Γ = 4.8 ± 0.7 meV and for the 2.98 MeV, 32+ level, Γ0 = 74±6 meV, Γ = 123±12 meV. Scattering and self-absorption measurements for the 3.92 MeV level are inconsistent, suggesting strongly that the level is a doublet. Observation of the scattered spectrum from a composite Na-Al scatterer with a Ge(Li) detector indicates a doublet separation < 5 keV. An incidental self-absorption measurement gives gΓ0 = 112±9 meV for the 3.96 MeV level of 27Al.
