Abstract

The reaction 208Pb(p, nγ)208Bi at incident proton energies between 7.0 MeV and 11.0 MeV has been used to excite proton-particle neutron-hole states in 208Bi and to study their γ-decay. In-beamγγ coincidence measurements have been made utilizing two Ge(Li) detectors combined with on-line computer analγsis. By this means a decay scheme for the levels in 208Bi below Ex ≈ 2 MeV has been established and several new spin assignments are suggested. A qualitative discussion of the observed gamma branching ratios and their relation to the single-particle transition strengths in the neighbouring nuclei 207Pb and 209Bi is given. The importance of these ratios in determining configuration admixture among the particle-hole multiplets is pointed out.
