Abstract

The angular distribution observed for the 57Fe(p, τ) reaction to a level near 1.29 MeV in 55Mn shows a striking rise at small angles. This signature of an L = 0 transferred pair requires the existence of a new state nearly degenerate with the 112 state known at 1.292 MeV. Comparison of the (p, τ) and d, α) angular distributions implies a spin of 12 for this state. Shell model calculations including both 2p-3h and 3p-4h states correctly predict this level and its properties.
