Abstract

Measurements have been made of the 12C(α, α0), 12C(α, α'), 12C(α, α′γ) and 12C(α, p) reactions for bombarding energies between Eα = 8.5 and 10.5 MeV.

Phase-shift analysis of the elastic scattering angular distributions and excitation functions complemented by particle and γ-ray angular distributions and Doppler-broadened profile measurements of the 12C(α, α'γ) reaction, enabled level assignments in 16O as follows:

Eα(MeV)Ermx(MeV)JπΓc.m.(keV)ΓαoΓα′
8.960 ± 0.01013.882 ± 0.0084+72 ± 104923
9.140 ± 0.03014.017 ± 0.0230+213 ± 30≈ 213
10.198 ± 0.01014.810 ± 0.0086+67 ± 102542 A complete description of the levels in the region of excitation studied was not possible because of the strong interference effects which were present.
