Abstract

From measurements of kaonic atom X-ray energies we measure the negative kaon mass to be 493.87 ± 0.19 MeV. The effects of the strong interaction between the kaon and nucleus cause the X rays from the 4f-3d transition in chlorine (Z=17) to be shifted by -0.94 ± 0.40 keV. This shift was used to estimate the strong interaction shifts needed for the mass measurement.

Furthermore, as X-ray transition energies are proportional to the reduced mass of the system, studies in the intermediate region of the atomic cascade have been used to measure the masses of the negative particles. In order to minimize the influence of strong interaction on the mass determination only transitions between circular orbits (n, n − 1) → (n − 1, n − 2) far from the nucleus are usually investigated [4]. In this work, we have calculated with high accuracy the quantum electrodynamic (QED) contribution to the binding energy both to allow extraction of strong energy shift from experiments and to provide accurate energies of highly circular transitions, where the strong interaction is negligible, to be used for calibrations of mass measurements [5,6].
