Abstract

Angular distributions of gamma rays from the reaction ¹²C(α,γ)¹⁶O in the energy region E_α = 7.6–8.1 MeV were measured with good accuracy. The coefficients of the Legendre polynomial expansion of the angular distributions are given as functions of energy. Some resonance parameters are extracted.

Photonuclear reaction cross sections for 12C, 14N and 16O

The results of an evaluation of the available photonuclear-reaction data for ¹²C, ¹⁴N and ¹⁶O are presented. While some reaction-yield data are given for energies up to 50 MeV, the primary emphasis is on the excitation-energy range extending from the proton separation energies up to 30 MeV. In addition to photodisintegration measurements, cross-section data derived from inverse particle-capture and electrodisintegration experiments are considered. Data are presented in graphical as well as tabular form. Included in the tables are: energy-weighted moments of the cross sections, bremsstrahlung induced reaction-yield data, radioactive-properties of reaction products, and reaction separation energies.
Studies in nuclear spectroscopy using the (γ, γ') and the (γ, n) reactions

The technique of using elastic and inelastic resonance scattering of monochromatic protons for studying the spectroscopic properties of energy levels in various nuclei is discussed. The photons are produced by thermal neutron capture in some metallic elements. The resonance levels are photoexcited by a random overlap between one of the incident γ-lines and one nuclear level of the scattering isotope. It is shown that such (γ, γ') reactions may be used for measuring the excitation energies, the spins, parities and radiative widths of the resonance levels. Also the excitation energies and spins of the low lying levels, the absolute strengths of E1, M1, E2, M2 transitions from the resonance level can be obtained. For unbound levels, the study of the (γ, n) reaction can provide information on the spin, parity, neutron width of the resonance level, interference between various multipolarities, and spectroscopic information on the energy level of the A − 1 isotope. The advantages of using stronger γ-sources from hugh flux reactors is discussed.
A remeasurement of the 12C(α, γ<inf>0</inf>) excitation function in the vicinity of the 12.44 and 13.1 MeV levels of 16O

The excitation function of the $^{12} C(α, γ_{0})$ reaction at θ = 90° has been remeasured for bombarding energies between 6.5 and 8.5 MeV. The measurement was made to resolve discrepancies apparent in earlier measurements relating to the absolute cross section, the location of the lower 1⁻ resonance near 7.05 MeV (¹⁶O excitation energy 12.44 MeV) and to the relative peak cross sections of this resonance and a second 1⁻ resonance at 7.88 MeV.
The 15N(p, α)12C reaction with polarized protons from 0.34 to 1.21 MeV

A polarized beam was used to measure angular distributions of the analyzing power of the ¹⁵N(p, α)C reaction at 0.34 MeV and at five energies from 0.92 to 1.21 MeV. The analyzing power can be fitted with associated Legendre polynomials, P₁¹ and P¹₂ sufficing to describe the results except near 1.2 MeV where P₃¹ is also required. Polarization excitation functions were measured throughout the entire energy range at angles where the polynomials P¹₂ and P¹₃ are zero. A polarization contour map is given.
