Abstract

228Th prepared by second-order neutron capture was recovered from 226Ra irradiated in a nuclear reactor. The sample was studied by calorimetry for approximately 3400 days, then opened to permit analysis of the contents. A least-squares analysis of the data gave a half-life value of 1·91313 ± 0·00088 yr (probable error) for 228Th. In addition, the data permitted the determination of the value of 3·665 ± 0·038 days (probable error) as the half-life of 224Ra, the daughter of 228Th.
