Diffraction effects in the high energy (p, 2p) reaction

Abstract

Differential cross-sections for the (p, 2p) reaction at 600 MeV show marked dependence on the recoil angle of the residual nucleus. It is shown that this dependence can be interpreted in terms of diffraction effects.

Calculations for quasi-elastic scattering 12C, 16O and 40Ca at 460 MeV

Differential (p, 2p) reaction cross sections are calculated for various shells of ¹²C, ¹⁶O and ⁴⁰Ca at 460 MeV and are compared with experiment. The DWIA calculations are carried out in the momentum representation which requires the use of a distorted-wave function which is different from the one in wide use at high energies. The difference between the two approximations is appreciable but not large, and both agree fairly well with experiment. Comparison of the coplanar symmetric with the non-coplanar symmetric cross sections for the $2 s 12$ shell of ⁴⁰Ca show an interesting effect. This is that the nodal structure of the radial wave function is strongly suppressed in the former type but not in the latter type.
