Abstract
A variational method of calculating correlated intrinsic wave functions for deformed nuclei is formulated. The configuration amplitudes and the single-particle orbitals which define such wave functions obey a system of equations, which is solved self-consistently by an iterative procedure for the doubly even nuclei in the shell. The correlations under study are of the 2p-2h type. Compared with the independent-particle Hartree-Fock picture, the present solutions show a greater stability in terms of binding energy and shape symmetry.
