Abstract

A Van de Graaff accelerator and a nickel foil isolated gas scattering chamber are used for elastic scattering of tritons and τ-particles by 4He. Angular distributions are measured for Et, = 2.98, 2.46 and 2.13 MeV, and Eτ = 2.98, 2.46 and 1.72 MeV over an angular range from 34.9° to 136.9° in the c.m. system. Computer extraction of the phase shifts using the partial waves up to l = 1 is undertaken. Comparisons of the present results with the available published results are made. A new method of beam collection by a Faraday cup in the target gas is attempted. The method is correct to ±4 % under the present experimental conditions.
