Abstract

The Hg198 level scheme has been investigated from the Tl198 and Tl198m (ε+β+) decays. A level scheme is proposed in which the following spins and parities have been determined by means of γ and conversion-electron spectra and γγ angular correlations: 1401.4 keV, Iπ=0+; 1612.7 keV, Iπ=2+; 1635.6 keV, Iπ=5; 1832.8 keV, Iπ=2+; 1846.8 keV, Iπ=3+; 1858.9 keV, Iπ=2+; 1900.7 keV, Iπ=2+; 2360.6 keV, Iπ=3+. We have measured the isomeric cross-section ratio σ(α,3n)mσ(α,3n)g.s.=5±1 for 35 MeVEα42 MeV. Lifetimes of two negative-parity states have been determined: τ(1635.6 keV,5)=89±15 psec and τ(1683.4 keV,67)=10.7±0.5 nsec which lead to B(E2; 6,75)=0.17±0.02 (e b)2; B(E1; 54+)=(3.5±0.6)×107 e2b; B(M2; 54+)=0.033±0.008 μN2b. Experimental data are well reproduced by calculations based on the hole-core coupling model using a pairing residual force between proton holes.
