Energy of the Second Excited State of ^{12}C and the Rate of the Triple-Alpha Reaction
Abstract
The excitation energy of the second excited state of 12C has been measured to be = 7.6562 + 0.0021 MeV. This value of E leads to a factor of exp (-0.138/T9) change in the 3a reaction rate quoted by Fowler, Caughlan, and Zimmerman and a substantial change in the products of helium-burning nucleosynthesis.
