Abstract

Angular distributions of the neutron polarizations for the n0 and n1 groups from the 6Li(d, n) and 7Li(d, n) reactions were measured for deuteron energies from 2.5 to 3.7 MeV. Helium was used as a polarization analyzer and a spin precession solenoid was used to simulate interchange of the “side” detectors. The polarization distributions for the four groups studied have shapes that are very constant with energy over the energy range studied. The maximum absolute value of the measured polarizations is greater than about 0.40 for all except the 7Li(d, n1) reaction. Distorted wave Born approximation calculations in which capture of the proton in the 1p shell with j = 32 was assumed, were made for the 6Li(d, n1 and 7Li(d, n0) reactions at 3.7 MeV. Using optical-model parameters that were obtained from published values, reasonable agreement with cross-section data was obtained and the predicted polarizations resembled the measured data somewhat.
