Abstract

The equations-of-motion formalism is used to extend the RPA (random-phase approximation) to the negative parity excitations of open-shell nuclei. Thus the open-shell RPA extends the simple microscopic description of collective vibrations to non-simple nuclei and renders a whole new range of nuclei accessible to microscopic theoretical investigation. As a simple example, the model is applied to describe the negative parity excitations of 12C based on an uncorrelated ground state taken from a shell-model calculation within the 1p32 and 1p12 sub-shells. Comparison is made with the (much less realistic) standard RPA for which the uncorrelated ground state is taken to be the closed 1p32 sub-shell.
