Observation of an 8− level in 20Ne

Abstract

A state in ²⁰Ne at 15.62 MeV excitation has been found. From the systematics of its cross section, it appears to be an unnatural parity state and may be the spin 8 member of the K^π = 2⁻ rotational band of (82) SU₃ symmetry.

16O and 19F induced multi-nucleon transfer reactions in light nuclei

Triton, α-particle, five- and nine-nucleon transfer reactions induced by ¹⁹F in ¹²C and ¹⁶O in ¹¹B at incident energies above the Coulomb barrier have been measured in order to study the nuclear structure of ¹⁵N, ¹⁶O and ²⁰Ne, and the reaction mechanism. The possibility of obtaining spectroscopic information by a comparison of the spectra and cross sections in the different reactions is discussed, DWBA calculations with the fixed-range model show that the strongly absorbing optical potentials extracted from the analysis of the elastic scattering and successfully used for different heavy-ion-induced proton transfer reactions, can be applied to heavy-ion-induced multi-nucleon transfer reactions.
Evidence for a direct eight-nucleon transfer reaction and multiparticle excitation of 20Ne

Results from a study of the ¹²C(¹⁴N, ⁶Li) ²⁰Ne reaction are presented which give evidence that the reaction proceeds via the direct transfer of eight nucleons. Comparison of the spectra of the emitted ⁶Li particles to spectra from four-nucleon transfer reactions also leading to states in ²⁰Ne show clear differences in the excitation of the various rotational bands. The selectivity of the (¹⁴N, ⁶Li) reaction provides a new probe for investigating multiparticle-excited states and states having high angular momenta.
