Abstract

The two center shell model has been used to calculate ion-ion potentials for 12C+12C, 16O+16O, and 18O+18O. Because of the ion shell structure the 16O+16O potential is significantly shallow, in agreement with optical model potentials derived from scattering experiments. A mechanism is proposed to calculate the transition between adiabatic and nonadiabatic potentials as a function of the ion energies.
