Abstract

The intense peak observed in the spectra of the Pb208(He3, d)Bi209 reaction at an excitation energy of 4.42 MeV has given rise to two conflicting interpretations, neither of which has satisfactorily explained its intensity. In the present work a resolution of 16 keV was obtained for the (He3, d) reaction and the peak was resolved and shown to be a doublet with the intensity ratio 3:1. A possible interpretation of this doublet is discussed.
