Abstract

A PHF calculation has been carried out for the ground state rotational bandin ⁸Be. The results indicate that the band has no cut-off at L = 4 in the SU₃ model but continues to higher values of L.

The ground state rotational band in <sup>8</sup>Be and the instability of the SU(3) classification

The low-lying states of ⁸Be are studied in three different approximations: the shell model without and with configuration interaction and the projected Hartree-Fock method. The calculation shows that the classification of states in SU(3) bands is destroyed when configuration mixing is taken into account. The configuration interaction calculation gives a clue to understanding the growth of the ground state rotational band in terms of different SU(3) representations.
