Abstract

Angular correlations of γ rays leading to states in Ca39 at 2.47, 2.80, 3.03, 3.66, 3.95, and 4.02 MeV have been measured. The spins and parties of the first three excited states were found to be ½+, 72, and 32, in agreement with previous work. The mixing ratio determined for the 2.80→g.s. transition implies 98% M2, in disagreement with an earlier measurement. In conjunction with l-value assignments from distorted-wave Born-approximation analysis of charged-particle angular distributions, the present work assigns Jπ=92 for the 3.66-MeV state, 32 for the 3.95-MeV state, and ½+ for the 4.02-MeV state. Multipole mixing and branching ratios were extracted from the data.
