Abstract

The positon decay of 18Ne has been investigated using the 16O(3He, n) reaction with a natural oxygen gas target at bombarding energies between 10.0 and 11.0 MeV. The half-life T12 = 1.69±0.04 s has been determined for the 18Ne decay which lies far outside the standard deviation of the previously reported values. The reduced matrix element for the Gamow-Teller transition to the ground state of 18F, deduced from our results, ∥ƒσ∥2 = 1.11±0.04, is in agreement with the matrix element of the analogue transition of 18F to the ground state of 18O. A previously unreported allowed transition, 0.17±0.05 %, log ft = 4.52−0.26+0.11, has been observed, feeding the second 1+, T = 0 level of18F at 1701 keV.
