Abstract

The dipole photoreaction cross sections of ¹²C and ⁴⁰Ca have been calculated in the frame of the 1p-1h continuum approximation by means of the coupled-channel method. The results are compared with those obtained from the standard shell-model calculations and with the experimental data.

Self-consistent HF-RPA description of electron and photon nuclear reactions with Skyrme forces

A mean-field nuclear dynamics is investigated in the analysis of nuclear electromagnetic processes at low and intermediate (q, w) transfers. The theoretical framework is a self-consistent HF-RPA theory with Skyrme forces formulated in the one-nucleon energy continuum.
We review the results obtained in the Skyrme HF-RPA model by focusing on some specific aspects of the theoretical frame and discussing their incidence in the prediction of data. Main points of interest are: (i) the quasiparticle formulation of the Skyrme HF-RPA nuclear dynamics with the identification of a quasi-particle effective mass, (ii) the gauge-invariance of the Skyrme Hamiltonian which produces nuclear electromagnetic currents satisfying the continuity equation, (iii) the excitation and decay properties of the one-nucleon energy continuum.
The problems dealt with in the discussion of experimental data are the following: the quasi-deuteron effect in (γ, p) and (γ, n) reactions of closed shell nuclei at energies E_γ ≤ 300 MeV, Giant Multipole Resonances versus momentum transfer in inclusive (e, e′x) responses, the reaction mechanism in polarized ( $e$ , e′x) angular distributions at q ≤ 200 $MeV c$ , the evaluation of the missing strength in inclusive (e, e′) longitudinal responses at high momentum transfer, final state interactions and missing momentum distributions in coincidence (e, e′p) reactions in the quasi-elastic region.
A modified RPA for open-shell nuclei

A modified RPA suitable for open-shell nuclei is constructed using the Green function method. Unlike the standard RPA, this modification makes allowance for the spread of bound single-particle and single-hole states over more complex configurations which is done due to a more realistic approximation of single-particle Green functions. The calculations of the nucleon-nucleus S-matrix and of the probability amplitudes for the single-particle transitions of the nucleus from the ground state into scattering states are examined. For the separable effective forces these quantities are expressed in closed form.
An RPA model for the description of one-nucleon emission processes and application to 16O(γ, N) reactions

A coordinate space RPA formalism is proposed to handle one-nucleon emission processes in a self-consistent way. A method is outlined to solve the RPA equations so obtained for the whole class of rotationally invariant effective interactions, including those having a velocity dependence. The method is used to study ¹⁶O(γ, N) reactions with Skyrme-type effective interactions. The use of the long-wavelength approximation (LWA) when handling reactions of this type at medium energies, is criticized. Different alternative forms for the electric transition operators are used, applying Siegert's theorem or not, and it is shown that at higher momentum transfer, the obtained results are strongly sensitive to it. We emphasize that especially beyond energy regions where the LWA is valid, the use of Siegert's theorem should be carefully examined.
A semimicroscopic model of nucleon-nucleus scattering

A simple, but sufficiently realistic, model of nucleon-nucleus scattering with a separable effective interaction is formulated. A modified random-phase approximation (RPA) is used to make allowance for the coupling of single-hole states to other nuclear modes. Nucleon-nucleus scattering is described using the Chew-Low-Wick integral equation. The model permits the nucleon-nucleus S-matrix to be expressed explicitly through the variables obtained either from standard bound-state shell-model calculations or from experimental spectroscopic data. The calculations of the differential cross sections of photonucleon reactions are examined as an example of the application of the model.
The unified description of direct and resonant processes in the inelastic scattering of medium-energy projectiles on 40Ca

In the framework of the unified theory of direct and resonant reactions we investigate the excitation of the nucleus ⁴⁰Ca by medium-energy projectiles. We calculate the inelastic scattering spectra of electrons and α-particles as well as the corresponding coincidence spectra with an ejected nucleon in the final channel. The continuum shell-model applied in the 1p1h approximation turns out to be capable of describing the gross features of the experimental spectra. A considerable part of the smooth background is supposed to be produced by resonance transitions. We demonstrate the importance of high-lying single-particle resonances with large angular momentum for the explanation of the excitation spectrum around 30 MeV measured in reactions with a momentum transfer q ≳ 1 fm⁻¹. The giant quadrupole resonance at 18 MeV is described by a dominant $g_{92} 1 d_{52}^{−1}$ component which is in agreement with the decay channels observed experimentally. We show that coincidence spectra are suitable for suppressing the background.
A semimicroscopic model of nuclear vibrations with separable forces and the giant dipole resonance of 12C

In the generalized ph basis generated for the realistic nuclear ground state, the nuclear hamiltonian is approximated by an expression containing the separable effective forces and terms which can be estimated from the spectroscopic data. The model hamiltonian obtained is used to describe normal nuclear vibrations. The application of this approach in the shell-model theory of nuclear reactions is discussed. The S-matrix for nucleon-nucleus scattering is calculated explicitly. The ¹²C photodisintegration calculation is made as a test example.
