Scattering of polarized neutrons by 3He

Abstract

The asymmetry in elastic scattering of partially polarized neutrons by 3He is measured at neutron energies of 12 and 16 MeV as a function of the scattering angle. The 15N(d, n0)16O and 3H(d, n)4He reactions are used as sources of polarized neutrons. The polarization of the incident neutrons is deduced from measurements of the asymmetry in n-α scattering, so that the polarization in n-3He scattering can be evaluated. The results are discussed in the framework of a tentative phase-shift analysis.
