Abstract

The excitation curves for the following reactions were measured: $^{181} Ta(n,γ)^{182} Ta$ for E_n = 〈0.03-5.1〉 MeV, ¹⁸¹Ta(n,-2n) ^180mTa for E_m = 〈12.2-17.9〉 MeV, ¹⁸¹Ta(n, p)¹⁸¹Hf for E_n = 〈13.2-17.5〉MeV. The results were compared with the predictions of the statiscal theory.

Evaluated spectroscopic data for all nuclei with mass number A=180 and corresponding level schemes from radioactive decay and reaction studies are presented. This evaluation contains new data on ¹⁸⁰Ta from (p,nγ) and (d,2nγ) work; data on ¹⁸⁰Ta, ¹⁸⁰W, ¹⁸⁰Ir and ¹⁸⁰Hg from heavy-ion γ-ray measurements, and band structures; and data on ¹⁸⁰Os and ¹⁸⁰Os from ε-decays. The present evaluation supersedes the earlier one by E. Browne (1994Br17), published in Nuclear Data Sheets 71, 81 (1994).

Spectroscopic data for all nuclei with mass number A=180 have been evaluated, and the corresponding level schemes from radioactive decay and reaction studies are presented. Interesting data in this evaluation include the experimental β-decay branching of 0.29% 5 for ¹⁸⁰Hf (5.5 h) to ¹⁸⁰Ta (>1.2×10¹⁵ y), and the unusually large cross section measured for ¹⁸⁰Ta(γ, γ′). Such results may relate to the still unexplained natural abundance of ¹⁸⁰Ta, the rarest isotope found thus far. New experimental data on ¹⁸⁰Hf support major changes in previous spin and parity assignments, and in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy measurements have supplied the first extensive information on the level structures of ¹⁸⁰Pt and ¹⁸⁰Hg. The spin of ¹⁸⁰Lu remains undetermined suggesting the need for further measurements.
Excitation functions of 93Nb(n, 2n) 92mNb, 93Nb(n, α)90m,gY, 139La(n, α)136Cs and 181Ta(n, p)181Hf reactions in the energy range of 12.5-19.6 MeV

Cross sections were measured for the ⁹³Nb(n, 2n) ^92mNb, ⁹³Nb(n, α) ^90m,gY, ¹³⁹La(n, α)¹³⁶Cs and ¹⁸¹Ta(n, p)¹⁸¹Hf reactions in the energy range of 12.5–19.6 MeV. Use was made of the activation technique in combination with high-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy, except for the product ^90gY where radiochemical separation and β⁻ counting were applied. The neutron fluence rates were determined using two independent methods, viz. proton recoil telescope and ²⁷Al(n, α)²⁴Na monitor reaction. An appraisal of the available cross section data for the five investigated processes was carried out. Due to its relatively high importance as a dosimetry reaction an evaluation of the ⁹³Nb(n, 2n) ^92mNb excitation function based on the most recent data is recommended. For the other reactions our measurements furnish an extended data base. A comparison of the experimental data with values calculated from the semi-empirical code THRESH is presented. The code predicts unknown activation cross sections only with partial success.

Spectroscopic data for all nuclei with mass number A=180 have been evaluated, and the corresponding level schemes from radioactive decay and reaction studies are presented. Salient topics of this evaluation are the new limit (0.023%) for the fractional population of ¹⁸⁰Hf (5.5 h) from ¹⁸⁰Lu, and the negative search for a possible ¹⁸⁰Lu isomer with a half-life between 10 s and 5 min. Both results may help in explaining the natural abundance of the long-lived ¹⁸⁰Ta isomer in terms of the slow (S) and/or the rapid (R) neutron capture processes of nucleosynthesis in stars.
Cross section for reactions between neutrons and matter

The excitation functions for the reactions ⁵¹V(n, α)⁴⁸Sc, ⁵⁴Fe(n, α)⁵¹Cr, ⁵⁸Ni(n, 2n)⁵⁷Ni, ⁹³Nb(n, 2n)^92mNb, ¹⁸¹Ta(n, 2n)^180mTa and Pt(n, χn)^195mPt were measured in the range of 0.144–5.5, 8.6 and 12.3–18.3 Mev, using activation techniques. The reactions ⁷Li(p, n)⁷Be, D(d, n)³He and T(d, n)⁴He were used to produce the neutron. The neutron flux was determined by means of associated particle counting for Nb and reference cross sections for V, Fe, Ni, Ta and Pt. Activity measurements were performed using a 8 × 8 cm NaI(Tl) detector or 136 cm³ Ge(Li) detector. Some of the cross sections were evaluated through experimental data from other articles and ours.
