Abstract

The rescattering effect in reactions with three particles in the final state is discussed. The kinematic conditions for the observation of the contribution from the rescattering effect are given. The experimental results of the d+7Li → n+α+α reaction at deuteron bombarding energies Ed = 3.0, 3.2 and 5.9 MeV are presented. The experimental conditions were chosen in such a way that neutron-alpha particle rescattering after the decay of the 8Be (16.63 and 16.9 MeV states) and the 5He (16.70 MeV state) could be observed. An upper limit of ≦ 1 % has been established for the ratio of the neutron-alpha-particle rescattering contribution through an intermediate 8Be or 5He state to the sequential decay contribution through that state. This rescattering effect is so small that it cannot be confused with any “new” resonance levels.
