Abstract

A neutron time-of-flight spectrometer has been used to measure angular distributions and excitation functions for the reactions 12C(3He, n)14O and 16O(3He, n)18Ne at 3He energies between 9 and 10.6 MeV. The results indicate a direct reaction mechanism, and good agreement is obtained with angular distributions from DWBA double stripping calculations. These comparisons indicate the following energy-level spins and parities: 14O ground state 0+, 5.15 MeV 1 or 0+, 5.91 MeV 0+(1) and 6.30 MeV (3); 18Ne ground state 0+, 1.88 MeV 2+, 3.36 MeV (4+) and 3.61 MeV 2+. A new level was observed in 18Ne at 4.59±0.03 MeV. The level schemes are compared with those of the mirror nuclei 14C and 18O.
