Abstract

The distribution of single-proton strength in 209Bi has been studied by means of the reaction 208Pb(3He, d)209Bi. The 132 state in the multiplet at 2.6 MeV arising from the coupling of the h92 ground-state proton to the 3− state of 208Pb is populated and a spectroscopic factor of 0.06 is found. Seven other levels are strongly populated. Of these six are consistent with shell-model predictions and earlier assignments. The presence of the extrapeak is probably due to a particle-vibration coupling similar to the one associated with the 132 state.
