The elastic and inelastic scattering of 25 MeV alpha particles by 31P, 32S and 40Ca

Abstract

The cross sections for the elastic and inelastic scattering of 25 MeV alpha particles by ³¹P, ³²S and ⁴⁰Ca have been measured using a broad-range magnetic spectrograph and by semiconductor detector techniques. Angular distributions from 20° to 120° were obtained for the interactions exciting the states at 1.26 and 2.23 MeV in ³¹P, at 2.24 and 5.01 MeV in ³²S and at 3.73 and 4.48 MeV in ⁴⁰Ca. These cross sections are analysed with the adiabatic sharp cut-off model and by the coupled-channels model. The values of the deformation parameters are extracted and compared with those found in other investigations.

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=31 Isobars

Experimental nuclear spectroscopic data are evaluated for 11 known nuclides of mass 31 (F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K). Detailed evaluated information is presented for each reaction and decay experiment. Combining all the available data, recommended values are provided for energies, spins and parities, and half-lives of levels, with energies, branching ratios and multipolarities of γ radiations, and characteristics of β and α radiations in radioactive decays. ³¹P is the most extensively studied one among all nuclides via various reactions and decays, followed by ³¹S, ³¹Si, ³¹Mg and ³¹Al. Information for excited states in ³¹Ne, ³¹Na, ³¹Cl, ³¹Ar and ³¹K are limited; no excited states have yet been identified in ³¹F, even its ground-state half-life is unknown. Significant new data have become available for the structure of ³¹S, with its relevance to astrophysical applications. This work supersedes the earlier evaluation of A=31 by 2013Ou01, with literature cutoff date of Feb 15, 2013.

The experimental nuclear structure data and decay data are evaluated for the known nuclides of mass 40 (Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca, Sc, Ti). Detailed evaluated nuclear structure information is presented with the best values recommended for level energies, half-lives, γ-ray energies and intensities, decay properties (energies, intensities and placement of radiations), and other spectroscopic data. The ⁴⁰Ca and ⁴⁰K nuclides remain as the most extensively studied from many different reactions and decays; no excited states are known in ⁴⁰Mg, ⁴⁰Al, ⁴⁰P and ⁴⁰Ti. This work supersedes the earlier full evaluation of A=40 by J. Cameron and B. Singh (2004Ca38).
Nuclear Data Sheets for A = 32

Nuclear spectroscopic information for experimentally investigated nuclides of mass 32 (Ne,Na,Mg,Al,Si, P,S,Cl,Ar) has been evaluated. The principal sources of the Adopted Levels presented for nuclides close to the stability line are Endtʼs evaluations (1990En08,1978En02). The data sets for reactions and decays, including all available gamma-ray data, are based mostly on the original literature. Except for the half-life of ³²Ne decay, no other details about its decay characteristics are available. Structure data for ³²Ne and ³²Na are limited to only one excited state in each. The ³²Mg nuclide is of central and prime relevance in the ‘island of inversion’ at or near N=20 semi-closed shell. The lifetime of only one excited state in ³²Mg is known. The spin-parity assignments of several levels in this nucleus are not quite firm. The structure of ³²Ar is limited to only one known state at low energy and two resonances in the giant-dipole excitation region. The ³²P, ³²S and ³²Cl remain the most extensively studied nuclei through various reaction channels.

Nuclear spectroscopic information for the known nuclides of mass 40 (Al,Si,P,S,Cl,Ar,K,Ca,Sc,Ti) has been evaluated. The data sets for reactions and decays, including all available gamma-ray data, are based mostly on the original literature. There are no data available for the excited states in ⁴⁰Al, ⁴⁰Si, ⁴⁰P and ⁴⁰Ti. The identification and particle stability of ⁴⁰Mg are still uncertain, although search for this nuclide has been made (2002Lu09,2002No11,2003Pe31).
Inelastic excitation in the collisions of relativistic heavy ions

The penumbra of the profile function describing the nuclear collisions of relativistic heavy ions is related to the cross section for their producing a specific target-nucleus γ-ray, σ_γ. The analysis assumes that the diffuse-edge diffraction model suffices to calculate the inelastic cross sections to the particle-stable states of the target nucleus. When the deformation lengths, $δ_{L} ≡ β_{L} R$ , characterizing all important excitations are available from other experiments and the γ-branching of these states is also known, the only unknown quantity determining σ_γ is found to be the ratio of the diffuseness parameter of the profile function, d, to its radius, $R$ . The most reliably determined values of $d R$ , for the target ⁴⁰Ca, imply a rather wide penumbra, consistent with microscopic calculations.
Consistent calculations of (n,x) and (n,xγ) cross sections for <sup>40</sup>CA E<inf>n</inf> = 1-20 MeV

Cross sections for neutron interaction with ⁴⁰Ca, with emphasis on production of gamma rays, are calculated and compared with experiment. Various nuclear models are applied judiciously for the calculation. The Hauser-Feshbach theory for binary reactions is here extended to include tertiary reactions, which are important for ⁴⁰Ca from 10 to 20 MeV. To conserve angular momentum, we included continuum-level spins and parities in the gamma-ray-production calculation. An extensive measurement of gamma-ray-production cross sections, which became available after all model parameters were fixed, confirms the predictability of the models, particularly in the high-energy range, where tertiary reactions contribute significantly. Recommended values of the total neutron cross section are presented graphically in detail and other cross sections in overview.
