Abstract

Results of a projected Hartre-Fock calculation are presented both for the even and odd parity states of ⁹Be. It is found that the even parity states come down very low in the energy spectrum and explain the occurrence of non-normal parity states at low energies.

Effective interaction calculations for nuclei of mass 6 to 9

Shell model calculations using the effective interaction approach of Talmi are reported for normal parity states in nuclei of mass number 6–9. To fit simultaneously the energies of levels in these nuclei, energy shifts of ground state rotational bands in ⁸Be and ⁹Be are introduced. These shifts have their origin in the deformations of nuclei. The obtained matrix elements fit the data better than those of earlier authors, and resemble the matrix elements obtained from realistic interactions such as the Hamada-Johnston potential. Theoretical predictions are compared with new experimental data. M1 radiative widths, log ft values, and spectroscopic factors for single- and two-nucleon transfers are given to help in the interpretation of new data. The need for carrying out more calculations for 1p shell nuclei with realistic forces is discussed.
Optical model analysis of 9Be(p, p<inf>0</inf>)9Be cross sections and polarizations from 6 MeV to 30 MeV

Cross-section and polarization data for proton elastic scattering from ⁹Be in the lab energy range 6 to 30 MeV and in the angular range 20° to 160° have been analyzed using an optical model potential. Good quality fits are obtained with potential parameters which vary smoothly with energy. The effects of energy-averaged compound-nucleus resonances and of quadrupole coupling on the elastic scattering are investigated. The reaction is suggested for use as a polarization monitor since it compares favourably with α(p, p)α for this purpose. Contour maps of polarization, P, and cross section times P² are given as a function of angle and energy.
