Abstract

A number of self-consistent solutions are shown to exist for ²⁰Ne and ²⁴Mg. In ²⁴Mg, some of these lie very close in energy to the one previously obtained by Kelson. The structure of the Hartree-Fock field is examined.

Differential cross sections are measured for the elastic and inelastic scattering of 104 MeV α-particles from ²⁰Ne, ²²Ne, ²⁴Mg, ²⁶Mg and ²⁸Si. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of coupled channels on the basis of the rotational model and prove to be quite sensitive to both the magnitude and sign of the quadrupole and hexadecapole deformation. The extracted β₄ deformation parameters show a systematic trend through the region A = 20–28. Prolate shapes of ²⁰Ne, ²²Ne and ²⁴Mg, and the oblate shape of ²⁸Si are confirmed. The (α, α') scattering results are compared to results of other experimental and theoretical investigations.

The Hartree-Fock energy gap is examined for deformed nuclei in the sd shell using a Rosenfeld interaction. It is shown that the results of self-consistent calculations are in surprisingly good agreement with those obtained from a generalized Nilsson potential, implying that the energy gap may be ascribed to deformation. A many-particle description of the gap using the SU₃ scheme shows that the space symmetry effect is dominant and is responsible for the gap. It is suggested that this apparent contradiction arises as a consequence of working in a small space.
