Abstract

The tensor polarization parameters 〈T20〉, 〈T21〉 and 〈T22〉 of deuterons scattered from 4He have been measured in the energy range 2–9 MeV. Measurements were made at laboratory scattering angles of 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. The 3He(d, p)4He reaction was used as the polarization analyser. The largest observed polarization occurs at 5.35 MeV, 60°, where 〈T20〉 is 64% of its maximum possible value. Large values of 〈T22〉 were also observed, but 〈T21〉 was essentially zero except below 5 MeV. An investigation into the analysing power of the 3He(d, p) 4He reaction is presented.
