Abstract

The mechanisms of the 16O(p,p′α)12C and 20Ne(p,p′α)16O reactions have been studied for an incident proton energy of 13.1 MeV. It is shown that in 16O, about 75% of these events lead through levels in 13N and the other 25% lead through levels in 16O, there being no need to invoke direct interaction mechanisms. In 20Ne, there is slight evidence that the reactions lead through levels in 16O and 19F, but firm conclusions cannot be drawn in this case.
