Abstract

Various methods of treating the hard-core in a finite nucleus are examined, by carrying out a shell model calculation for the 18O nucleus, using the hard-core potential of Kallio and Kolltveit. The energies and the wave functions of the 0+, 2+, 4+ states in 18O are calculated. A comparison of the matrix elements in the three methods is made, and the effectiveness of each method in taking account of hard-core is discussed.
