Abstract

The reaction 12C(n, n′)3α has been studied in a CO2 filled expansion cloud chamber operated at 200 Torr in the state of expansion. A total of 1267 events were accepted for analysis. We found that all events could be interpreted as cascade decays via the levels 7.65, 9.63, 10.1, 10.8, 11.2, 11.82 and 12.73 MeV of 12C or 2.43 MeV of 9Be and further via the ground state or the 2.9 MeV level of 8Be or the ground state of 5He. The relative cross-sections of the different decay modes are given. The spin and parity of the 11.81 and 12.73 MeV levels of 12C should be 2 and 1+, respectively. The inelastic scattered neutrons, which leave 12C in the 9.63 MeV level, have an angular distribution symmetrical to 90° in the centre-of-mass system. The angular correlation of the α-particles emitted by 12C in the 9.63 MeV level may be fitted by assuming the assignment J = 3 for the 9.63 MeV level.
