A phenomenological relation between ground-state atomic masses in conjuction with charge symmetry is used to investigate all the masses of nuclei with A ⩽ 42 with Z > N. In cases where experimental data exist the agreement with the predictions is good.

For the most recent review of experimental data we have relied on ref. 11, except for the masses of 24Al, 28P, 32Cl and 40Sc when ref. 3 was used, and 30Sn, 37Ar and 42Ti where ref. 4 was used.
