Abstract

Intermediate coupling shell-model calculations with a simple effective interaction between nucleons are used to fit observed properties of the nuclei with mass numbers A = 6–9. Only states of the lowest configuration are considered. For each A-value, the exchange mixture and other parameters of the effective interaction are obtained by fitting level energies, M1 matrix elements, log ƒt values and reduced widths. The exchange mixtures obtained appear to vary with A. Some predictions which may be tested experimentally are given. Evidence for isobaric spin mixing in the 8Be levels in the 16–19 MeV region is discussed; there is difficulty in attributing all the observed mixing to the Coulomb interaction. There is some evidence of the need for configuration mixing and for a more complicated interaction.

The calculations of the 9Be + 15N elastic and inelastic scattering were performed with the following steps. The codes SPI-GENOA [26] and FRESCO [27] were used for the OM and CRC calculations, respectively. First, the 9Be + 15N double-folding potential was calculated with the code DFPOT [28,29] using the M3Y (Reid) nucleon–nucleon potential and charge distributions in 9Be and 15N [30].
