Abstract

The photoneutron cross section of calcium has been measured from threshold to 62 MeV using least structure analysis of the photon activation curve. The yield from the one-second activities, mainly due to the reactions 40Ca(γ, n)39Ca, 40Ca(γ, pn)38K and 40Ca(γ, 2n)38Ca, was separated from the yield due to longer-lived activities. Six maxima in the cross section were evident above 26 MeV. The energies of the peaks were 28.3+−0.3 MeV, 34.7+−0.4 MeV, 43.1+−0.6 MeV, 48.2+−0.3 MeV, 54.6+−0.4 MeV and 60.0+−0.6 MeV. The cross section integrated to 62 MeV was 114+−15 MeV · mb with a contribution of 12+−7 MeV · mb due to the 40Ca(γ, 2n)38Ca reaction.
