Abstract

Using a counter telescope technique, angular distributions of the deutrons have been measured between 25° and 155° at an energy of 11.6 MeV and in the case of Ar also of 10.6 MeV. The elastic scattering on Ar and Kr is studied in terms of the optical model. The angular distributions of the inelastically scattered deuterons from the following levels have been measured: Ne20; 1.63, 4.25, 4.97, 5.65, 5.80 MeV (the latter two not resolved), Ne22; 1.27 MeV and Ar40; 1.45, 2.53, 2.91, 3.22, 3.56, 3.71 MeV (the latter two not resolved). In the case of Kr two peaks were observed, the first of which can be assigned to the first 2+ levels of the main isotopes contained in the target. A systematic study of the angular distributions from the first excited 2+ states of several light nuclei shows that Blair's phase rule holds if these states have rotational character. The data further suggest that the 3.71 MeV level of Ar40 has spin and parity 3.
