Abstract

Six values for the polarization of the neutrons emitted at 50° in the reaction 7Li(p, n)7Be were obtained for proton energies from 3 to 4 MeV to a statistical accuracy of about 0.02. The solenoid precession technique was employed to reduce mechanical asymmetries. Elastic scattering from gaseous helium enclosed at high pressure in a thin-walled cell was used as an analyser. Pulse-height discrimination on the helium-recoil scintillations was employed to eliminate the effects of the neutrons which leave 7Be in its first excited state. The polarization was found to increase gradually from about 0.31 at 3 MeV to 0.38 at 4 MeV. In general, the results were consistent with previously measured values.
