Abstract

The hyperfine structure of the H726 level in 5.3-day Pm148 and the H63 level in 10-h Er165 have been measured by atomic-beam magnetic resonance. The spins of these isotopes have been verified to be I(Pm148)=1 and I(Er165)=52. The electronic g factor for the H726 level in Pm148 is found to be gJ=0.8278(1). The hyperfine constants and inferred nuclear moments are, {for Pm148:,A=+1038(75) Mcsec,,B=98(103) Mcsec,}{μI=+2.07(21) nm,,Q=+0.2(2) b;}{andfor Er165:, |A|=195(6) Mcsec,,|B|=3502(115) Mcsec,,BA<0,}{|μI|=0.65(3) nm,,|Q|=2.2(1) b,,QμI>0.} The nuclear moments of Pm148 were calculated from the hyperfine constants and assumptions made concerning the electronic fields at the nucleus; these assumptions include a 2% correction for the breakdown of Russell-Saunders coupling, but do not include corrections for the Sternheimer effect. The stated errors include a 5% uncertainty for 1r3. The Fermi-Segrè formula and the direct measurement of the magnetic moment of Er167 were used to calculate the dipole moment of Er165. The quadrupole moment of Er165 has not been corrected for the Sternheimer effect. The measurements indicate that Pm148 may be described by the shell model, but that Er165 is deformed and must be interpreted by the collective model.
