Abstract

Absolute cross sections for the C12(p, pn)C11 reaction at proton energies between 21 and 50.5 MeV were measured at the Brookhaven Linac. Beam intensity was measured with a Faraday cup and the C11 induced in polyethylene foils was assayed in a calibrated well-type scintillation counter. Corrections for C11 gas loss from the foils were applied. The C12(p, pn)C11 cross section at 50.5 MeV is 86.4±2.6 mb. Absolute cross sections for Na22 and Na22 production from aluminium were also measured at several energies.

The human body is mainly composed of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and calcium nuclei, and the production cross section of positron emitters (10C, 11C, 13N, 14O, 15O, 38K, 38Ca, and 39Ca) generated between the three elements excluding hydrogen and incident proton nucleus is important to estimate the range and exposure dose distribution in the patient's body. The cross sections of 11C, 15O and 13N were measured at several proton energies [4–22]; however, those quantity and accuracy are insufficient yet. The cross sections of 10C, 14O, 38K and 39Ca were measured only at few points [11,23,24].

Besides, experimental data on the reactions 24Mg(p,x)22Na (Meadows and Holt, 1951; Bodemann et al., 1993), 25Mg(p,x)22Na (Meadows and Holt, 1951), 26Mg(p,x)22Na (Meadows and Holt, 1951) and natMg(p,x)22Na (Bodemann et al., 1993; Batzel and Coleman, 1954; Furukawa et al., 1971; Lagunas-Solar and Carvacho, 1990) have been reproduced by the exciton model, reasonably. The calculation of the excitation function of 27Al(p,x)22Na reaction is also compared with available experimental data (Bodemann et al., 1993; Batzel and Coleman, 1954; Hintz and Ramsey, 1952; Gauvin et al., 1962; Cumming, 1963; Williams and Fulmer, 1967; Miyano, 1973; Aleksandrov et al., 1988; Lagunas-Solar et al., 1988; Steyn et al., 1990; Buthelezi et al., 2006; Khandaker et al., 2011; Titarenko et al., 2011) in Fig. 1. The hybrid and GDH models in the compound nucleon formation region have predicted the cross sections higher than the experimental ones and other models.

The energy ranges in the target are represented by horizontal error bars in Fig. 3 and the uncertainties of the energies in Table 2. Our measurements for the production cross section of the 12C(p, pn)11C reaction channel shown in Fig. 3(a) were close to the data of Cumming (1963a, 1963b) and Measday (1966), and were generally lower than those of Hintz and Ramsey (1952). No uncertainty for Hintz et al. was found in the EXFOR database (EXFOR/CSISRS, 2012).

A large amount of experimental data is available up to 100 MeV. A total of six experimental cross section data sets were considered in the energy range from threshold to 100 MeV for the 27Al(p,x)22Na reaction [12–17]. The threshold of 27Al(p,3p3n)22Na is −50.8 MeV.
