Abstract

A compilation of the available results on the total (n, α) reaction cross-sections at ≈ 14 MeV neutron energy has been made. The possible existence of a shell effect was searched for in regions of lighter nuclei. It is found that there is indeed a proton shell effect. The observed cross-section shows a minimum when the atomic number of the residual nucleus is a magic number.

The “Levkovskii trend” observed by several workers in the case of (n, p) reactions is not clearly observable; departure is seen in the isotopic pairs of the lightest nuclei (Z = 17 to 30) and in Zr, Te, Sm, Dy and Ir.

It has been found that the agreement of the statistical theory with the measured (n, α) cross-sections of the Te-isotopes is good. It may be assumed that this theory gives good fits with observed data up to medium weight nuclei.
