Abstract

We have observed the excitation of the 7.65 MeV level (0+) in the inelastic scattering of 14 MeV neutrons from 12C. The angular distribution gives a strong forward maximum σ(θ) ≈ 8 mb/sr at θ = 20° (about 0.1 of the 4.43 MeV level excitation cross section). The simple Bessel-function distribution j02(kR), with R ≈ 5.4 fm for the nuclear interaction radius, agrees, at first sight with data (except at wide angles) suggesting a direct-interaction process (α-cluster excitation).

Experimental differential cross sections are also presented for elastic scattering and for the 4.43 and 9.63 MeV levels.
