Abstract

An ionization chamber, containing He3 and krypton to a total pressure of 6.6 atm, has been developed for the measurement of fast neutron spectra with an energy resolution varying between 40 keV and 70 keV for neutrons in the energy range from a few hundred keV to a few MeV. Some details are given of the properties of this new instrument and of the methods evolved for the accurate measurements of Q values of (p, n) reactions. For the Na23 (p, n) Mg23 reaction, Q values of −4.835±0.003 and −5.288±0.004 MeV have been obtained for the ground and first excited state transitions, respectively. In studies of the F19(p, n)Ne19 reaction three new levels (the third, fourth and fifth excited states of Ne19) have been identified at excitation energies of 1.506±0.005, 1.538±0.004 and 1.612±0.005 MeV.
