Abstract

The neutron radiative capture cross section of Li7 was measured for neutron energies between 40 and 1000 kev and at thermal energy. The reaction was detected by observing the beta decay of Li8 in a natural LiI crystal exposed to a flux of monoenergetic neutrons. The cross sections for the Li7(n, γ)Li8 reaction were obtained relative to the known cross sections for the Li6(n, t)He4 and the I127(n, γ)I128 reactions which also took place in the crystal. The Li7(n, γ) cross section decreases from a value of 50×106 barn at 40 kev to 5×106 barn at 1000 kev. A maximum in the cross section was found at 250 kev, corresponding to a known level in Li8 at 2.28 Mev. The observed radiation width of this level was 0.07±0.03 ev.
