Abstract

The cross section for the elastic scattering of protons by N14 has been measured at center-of-mass angles of 90°, 125°, 154°, and 160° for proton energies between 620 and 1820 kev. Anomalies were observed at 1054±3, 1544±6, 1737±4, and 1799±5 kev. If one assumes that the nonresonant cross section results from only s-wave potential scattering, the assignments J=32+ at 1054 kev and J=12+ at 1544 kev are deduced. Fitting of the 1737-kev anomaly has not been found possible if one assumes a pure s-wave background. This uncertainty in background also prevents a definitive analysis of the 1799-kev data. However, qualitative theoretical fits of the 1799-kev data are obtained for p-wave formation of either a J=12 or 32 state.
