Abstract

At a bombarding energy of 160 keV, the reaction 7Li(d, α) 5He is isolated by selecting the corresponding group of monoergic alpha particles with a differential detector and the angular distribution of the coincident neutrons from the disintegration of 5He is then studied with a scintillation counter. The neutrons are emitted within a cone, and from the distribution through the cone it si deduced that the angular distribution function for the disintegration of 5He with respect to the direction of emission of the initial alpha particle is f(θ) = 1+Asin2θ. The results can be fitted for A = 0.72 with the distribution of 5He excitation energies used by Adair 10) in interpreting data on neutron scattering by helium. The dynamics of our experiment are such that the ground state properties predominate in the results for the angular distribution and we thus confirm that the ground state has spin 32, since a spin of 12 would lead to isotropy.
