Measurements of the separated longitudinal structure function FL from hydrogen and deuterium targets at low Q2

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 1,2H(e, e'), E=2.24, 3.04, 4.41, 5.50 GeV; measured scattered electrons, differential σ(E, θ) using the high momentum spectrometer (HMS) and the short orbit spectrometer (SOS) at CEBAF-Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator (JLab) facility; deduced structure functions and longitudinal structure functions for protons and deuterons using Rosebluth separation technique, smaller longitudinal structure function and a smaller ratio of longitudinal to transverse cross section for deuteron than the proton, possible suppression of the gluonic distribution in nuclei. Comparison with parametrizations, previous experimental data, and theoretical predictions extrapolated to the beam energies investigated.

Sub-barrier fusion of weakly bound 6Li with 58Ni

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 58Ni(6Li, X), E=10.8, 11.5, 12.7, 13.2, 13.7, 14.4 MeV, [secondary pure 6Li beam from 3He(6Li, 6Li), E=31-38 MeV reaction]; measured σ(θ, E) for evaporated protons at the University of Notre Dame FN tandem accelerator facility; deduced proton multiplicities, fusion σ(E) and total reaction σ(E). Proton angular distributions compared with statistical model calculations using PACE2 code. Comparison of fusion σ(E) data with previous experimental data for this reaction and for the 6Li+59Co, 6Li+64Zn, and 6Li+64Ni systems. Comparison with theoretical calculations using one-dimensional barrier penetration model (BPM) and coupled-channel (CC) method using optical model potentials.

Near- and sub-barrier fusion of the 7Be + 58Ni system

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 58Ni(7Be, X), E=16.4, 17.5, 19.4, 20.1, 20.9, 21.9 MeV; measured evaporated proton spectra, σ(E) for protons at Notre Dame TwinSol Radioactive Nuclear Beam facility and FM tandem accelerator; deduced total fusion σ(E) using proton multiplicities. Comparison with predictions of Wong's one-dimensional barrier-penetration model (BPM), and optical model potential (OMP). Comparison with previous experimental results for fusion σ(E) in 27Al(7Be, X), and fission σ(E) in 238U(7Be, F).

Proton pair correlations and the neutrinoless double-β decay of 76Ge

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 74,76Ge(3He, n), E=16 MeV; measured E(n), I(n), time-of-flight, σ(θ) for g.s. and first 2+ state using the Neutron Wall at Notre Dame. 76,78Se; deduced levels, proton pair correlations. DWBA analysis. Comparison with quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) model calculations. Relevance to matrix elements for 0νββ decay of 76Ge. Systematics of ground-state cross sections on fpg-shell nuclei of A=60-90, and comparison with theoretical models. No evidence for the breaking of the BCS approximation for paired protons.

Optical model analysis of σ(θ) data using Woods-Saxon and double-folding type potentials. 12C(8B, 8B); deduced effect of breakup by coupled-channels calculations using continuum discretized coupled-channel method and cluster-model folding potentials. Experimental data for 12C(α, α), (6He, 6He), (7Li, 7Li), (9Be, 9Be), (11B, 11B), (16O, 16O), E(cm)=2.8-22.8 MeV used to extract reduced reaction σ.
