Spin-flip loss in magnetic traps for ultracold neutrons

RADIOACTIVITY 1n(β-); calculated spin-flip rates and storage losses for ultracold neutrons (UCNs) trapped in magnetic fields using three theoretical approaches, and comparing their results. Relevance to improved measurement of the neutron lifetime for β decay, and resolution of its current unsatisfactory status.

Spin flip loss in magnetic confinement of ultracold neutrons for neutron lifetime experiments

RADIOACTIVITY 1n(β-); analyzed spin flip loss for ultracold neutrons (UCN) in magnetic bottles of the type used in experiments for precise measurement of the neutron lifetime using two dimensions field model for cylindrical multipole fields; also developed a general analysis applicable to three dimensions, and to bowl-type field configuration used for the Los Alamos UCNt experiments. Discussed systematic errors in precision neutron lifetime experiments.

Quasielastic scattering in the interaction of ultracold neutrons with a liquid wall and application in a reanalysis of the Mambo I neutron-lifetime experiment

RADIOACTIVITY 1NN(β-); analyzed T1/2 using theory of ultracold and very cold neutron scattering on viscoelastic surface waves up to second-order perturbation theory. Reanalyzed 1989 neutron-lifetime experiment using ultracold neutron storage in a Fomblin-coated vessel by Mampe et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 593 (1989)]; revised the neutron lifetime value from 887.6(30) s to 882.5(21) s. Comparison with other neutron lifetime measurements. Relevance to Standard Model (SM) predictions and the up-down quark mixing coefficient V2ud.
