New anomaly observed in 12C supports the existence and the vector character of the hypothetical X17 boson

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 11B(p, e+e-), E=1.5-2.5 MeV; measured electron and positrons, energy-sum spectra and angular correlation; deduced anomalous excess of e+e- pairs around 155-160null from the decay of 17.2 MeV J=1- state in 12C via E1 transition. Extracted X17 boson branching ratio, mass of X17 particle; likely the same as X17 particle suggested by 2016Kr01 (Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 042501). Scintillation detectors and double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSD) at 2 MV Tandetron accelerator of ATOMKI (Debrecen, Hungary).

DWBA analysis of angular distribution data for 208Pb(p, p') using FRESCO code.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 208Pb, 12C(70Zn, 70Zn'), E=51.8 MeV/nucleon; 208Pb, 12C(68Ni, 68Ni'), E=40.8, 47.68 MeV, [secondary 68Ni beam from 9Be(70Zn, X), E=60 MeV/nucleon primary reaction, followed by separation of fragments using LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL and implanted in a plastic detector]; measured Doppler corrected γ spectra, Eγ, Iγ, γ(θ), scattered particles, (70Zn)γ- and 68Niγ-coin using 46 hexagonal BaF2 crystals for γ detection, and position-sensitive gas-filled detectors for particles. 68Ni, 70Zn; deduced levels, σ, B(E2) and deformation parameters for the first and second 2+ states from intermediate energy Coulomb excitation; calculated Potential-energy surface in (β, γ) plane using constrained Hartree-Fock minimization in the shell-model basis, levels, J, π of 70Zn using shell model, generator coordinate method (GCM), and triaxial AMP, and compared to experimental level structure.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 3H(p, e+e-)4He, E=510, 610, 900 keV; measured electron and positrons, energy-sum spectra and angular correlation of e+e- pairs using scintillation detectors and double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSD) at the 2-MV Tandetron accelerator of ATOMKI, Debrecen; deduced anomalous excess of e+e- pairs around 115°, interpreted as creation and subsequent decay of a light particle during the direct capture process; extracted internal pair creation coefficient (IPCC), X17 boson branching ratio, mass of X17 particle with confidence level; likely the same as X17 particle suggested by 2016Kr01 (Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 042501). 7Li(p, e+e-)8Be, E=441 keV; measured angular correlation of e+e- pairs for the 17.6-MeV, M1 transition in 8Be as a test of the experimental apparatus and methodology.

Discussed ratio of the cross sections for low-lying 1+ states populated in 40Ar(p, n) and 40Ar(3He, t) reactions. Relevance of 40Ar in the use of liquid argon as a medium for neutrino detection.
