Nuclear structure relevant to neutrinoless double β decay: The valence protons in ⁷⁶Ge and ⁷⁶Se

NUCLEAR REACTIONS ^74,76Ge, ^76,78Se(d, ³He), (polarized d, ³He), E=80 MeV; measured ³He spectra, σ, angular distributions, vector analyzing powers. ^74,76Ge, ^76,78Se(³He, d), E=72 MeV; measured deuteron spectra, σ, angular distributions. ^73,75Ga, ^75,77As, ^77,79Br; deduced levels, J, π, angular momentum transfers, spectroscopic factors. Comparison of angular distribution and polarization data with distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations. ⁷⁶Ge, ⁷⁶Se; deduced occupancies of valence proton orbitals in ground states. Comparison of occupancies of valence proton and neutron orbitals in ground states of ⁷⁶Ge and ⁷⁶Se with QRPA and shell-model calculations. Discussed implications for neutrinoless double β decay of ⁷⁶Ge to ⁷⁶Se.
